3D Render of the Sphenoid Bone
Maya, ZBrush, 2025
The sphenoid bone is one of the most complex bones in the human body. It is a butterfly-shaped bone located at the base of the skull, forming a central structural component of the cranial floor. The sphenoid articulates with nearly all other cranial bones and contributes to the formation of the orbits, nasal cavity, and several key foramina. Its major anatomical features include the body, greater and lesser wings, and the pterygoid processes.
This 3D model was created in ZBrush using five subdivision levels to support varying degrees of anatomical complexity. After completing the high-resolution sculpt, the model was manually retopologized in Maya using Quad Draw. The retopologized mesh was then reimported into ZBrush, where surface details from the original sculpt were projected onto the low-polygon model. A displacement map was exported and baked in Adobe Substance Painter, where additional surface detailing and refinement were completed.
